kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
Well its time for a build!
That's what I told myself after almost finishing my friends s13 project. I'm a car guy love high performance and Nissan vehicles (especial the ones that where build before Nissan joined Renault)
My favorite is the z32 but got into the s chassis after high school.
So welcome to my build.
This is how the car looked when I saw it first end of June 2009
It sat in the garage for 2 years not even moved. Had 133k mi stock auto ka with a broken engine. 4th cylinder rod decided it needed some delight.
The reason why this happened is the previous owner didn't replace the thermostat when needed and was driving on the hwy, engine overheated sized 4th piston broke rod destroyed the block oil spilled out got on rear tires guy sponout going 70 on the hwy almost killed himself but car was intact except the engine. Then he got a engine from a junkyard but never installed it left the car in the garage for 2 years.
Than I found the car showed up the same day gave the guy a deposit and brought it home within 3 days.
I also got a s13 engine and a set of 17 in wheels with the car for less than 2.5k
The work started in July 2009 the plan was to swap the s13 engine (junkyard engine that i didn't know anything about) I got with the car just to see if the car was fine. End of Summer the car was swapped but unsuspected happened the car wouldn't start, so I got pissed And whipped out another s13 engine from my friends s13 that hi didn't need and I knew that worked, that also was a stick ( no excuses not to convert to 5speed now).
Now within a month I disassembled the engine replaced all gaskets and cleaned the whole thing. Next month
I swapped in the 5speed total cost around 1k (not too bad), The most expensive part was a 1pice aluminum driveshaft 350 shipped.
Free engines that's why I like people who get sr20's or don't know crap about engines.
Thanks too a very cool guy at work that gave me the confidence to rebuild most of the engine Its done. The only thing I didn't tuch is the bottom end because of machine work (total cost u wouldn't believe me if i told you guys anyway)
Its end of October the swap is complete the car starts and runs. I got insurance and registration.
I go for a first drive
Car stops front calipers size (2 years in garage seemed too much for them) crap
But I have z32 brakes i picked up in May with rotors and good pads for 180$ almost 2 months before I got the s14. (luck)
to be continued

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
So Its a new year and my engine runs OK but not great. my plan was to turbo that ka I have in there but it looks like its not worth it. So i decided to build a engine to push like 350 or 400hp with daily driving in mind and mid range power.
these are some parts i was collecting for the future upgrade

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
I just did more work on the engine and it took me a good deal of time. Hopefully it was worth the time and works out, the plan is to make the engine and setup as efficient as possible so I don"t have to run alot of boost to make power. Over time I figured out that a biggest difference between a sr and a ka is how the engine intake and exhaust flow. Sr has bigger exhaust ports to flow more on the exhaust side to spin the turbo while the ka has tiny ports on the exhaust side to increase back pressure and exhaust velocity, same thing with intake ports Sr have short runners to lower velocity but flow better at high rpm (its a high reving engine) Vs the Ka with extra long intake runners for higher velocity to increase torque.
So I polished the ports on the intake side but left some roughness to prevent fuel sticking at low rpm and ported and polished the exhaust ports. But I didn't stop there I also polished the manifold and downpipes elbow and port-matched everything to each other side
take a look.
before
after
before
after
port-marched manifold and elbow
Lapped my valves in the head
Also cut out my head to fit bigger cams and dual valve springs in the future.
Welded the oil drain to the pan
Got oil feed lines adapter

new updates
engine almost ready
looks good so far
oil drain for the turbo clears oil pan bolts and A/C ( yas A/C and a gt3071r next to it lol) hopefully it fits

Engine looks great... When are you expecting to get done? And if you or your friend ever need to get an engine for your cars I can give you a number where you can get it cheap and with a good warrenty.

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
So I'm getting closer to the d-day
Recently I picked up the Walbro 255lpm fuel pump and installed it
installed my lc1 widebend
Installed auto-meter gauges for boost and oil pressure and air fuel ratio
did some more work on the engine
picked up a mithimoto radiator
Picked up my turbo after 3 weeks of waiting
got a new intercooler from a fd thats 3.5 thick and im gonna mount the
radiator ac and cooler as close to the engine as possible to run short piping
for boost response
810cc injectors
gauges
Bov
Radiator and cooler
turbo is a gt3071r with a 4" inlet with antisurge and a 86a/r turbine
turbo on the engine test fitting

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
On July 26th I started on my swap
More work was done on the engine and trans
installed clutch flywheel short shifter with a brass shifter bushing
cleaned and ported intake manifold
before
after
Its August 15 new engine is in
still has to be bolted on and wired up
next have to make my intake cooler setup and and radiator v mounted
Than when all the fluids are in and everything mechanical is done im starting to tune it with nistune then 500 mile brake in for the engine and clutch it will be done I say 2 to 3 weeks.

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
Now its a month seance I started and i can officially say that I'm mechanically done with the swap.
Well it took me a month because i had alot of distractions like friends and family members coming over and getting me drunk all the time, but i can say i still did it fast.
The major issue that took about a week and a half was a custom intercooler setup that consists of a fd3s RX7 3.5 thick core with end tanks pointing to the engine bay and about 3 ft of piping including bov. I also made a 3.5 in turbo inlet pipe for the turbo.
perfect fit on the core
Yes that's the a/c core you're looking at I want to keep it clean and cool as you can see tired of hot ass weather.
That's where a z32 MAF will go later
As you can see there piping is minimal in length for one reason only boost response lol
most of this will be covered up by a aluminum plate and a diversion panels later on.
And now I have to start tuning this thing which is not simple at all hopefully get it running in a few days. I figured
out that the more you change on a engine the harder it will be to make it run later on.

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
Yeh I think it was like April when i got the strut bar from you then During that time i was just getting parts and still enjoying the stock motor it wasn't completely stock at that point. I had some stuff on it to make it breath better and a tuned ecu to bump in some power it had pickup also my stock clutch couldn't take the torque and was slipping when i took it off it had life left so that tells you it was running I also could make 2ft fireballs out the apaxi dual at high rpm My friend can vouch for that lol. Now I drive a stock s14 and i can tell you its a big difference than what the black s14 was capable off. It was a perfect daily lol. No truck engine there .
The best think about this experience is that "its easy to drive a fast car fast another thing is learning how to drive a slow car fast" . That's when technique comes in.

Re: kg300zxtt S14 kouki build (KA24DE-T)
I'm just updating my project and i have to say that its been a great experience working on it. It took me about a months to build and assemble this engine and drop it in, witch minimal or no help from anyone. Now it seems that I achieved what i setup to do, which was to see what I was capable of, If I could build a car from ground up. I realized that it was never about the car or power but something to prove to myself. Now I realized that I should seek to do what I believe I can do very well which is to become a example to others and start a shop that people can get good advice and direction to what they want to do with there cars. Now I just need a final power tune and carefully calculate and plan out whats next.
A few ideas are suspension and good rim tire combo.
Reinforcements to the frame.
Possible small weight reduction
Better brake setup
And more engine work (cams and valve springs to rev higher and make more power on high rpm's)
What you're looking at is a KA24DET
completely rebuild
Bored out 0.5 over with 9.1.1 compression ratio
port polished intake and exhaust ports
port matched exhaust manifold and intake manifold
polished intake manifold runners
Bottom mount Gt3071R with 4" inlet 0.86 A/R turbine with anti-surge
Custom intercooler setup
810cc sidefed injectors
Managed by nistune
