New to forum with 510
Hello everyone , my name is Curt an I am from the Green Bay area. Over tehe corse of the last two years my brother an I with help from others built an competed in a 1972 Datsun 510 rally car.
We started with aquiring two 510's in early 2008 from another rally inthusiest. One car was an old road racing car, an one was an old 70's rally car. With the old rally car being pretty rusty an the road racing car already mostly a shell, we decided to take both cars an make them into one car.
We took the better shell an had the inside sand-blasted an began seam welding re-inforcing an putting in the roll cage.
One of our good friends is an electrical engineer an built a custom wiring harness from scrach, with marine grade switches, circuit breaker protection, an flame retardent wire loom.,
We added a griffen Aluminum radiator, Coilover fronts, with bilsten inserts front an rear, hydraulic hand brake.. among many other fancy bits..
Originally the car had the L16 an side draft mukini solex carbs, which we upgraded with TWM fuel injection with a mega squirt. which was alot easer to tune an alot more driveable.
During our first rally the motor devolped a bit of a knock, that constantly got worse, but never failed. We took the running motor to Bay Speed to have him listen to it before we pulled it out to have him rebuild it.
The motor was completely rebuilt with aries pistons, costom vavles, ported head, as well as many other things, we raised the compression to the point of needing to run race gas. But unfortunatel it took the guys at Bay Speed something like 3 months to get the motor done. Then once it was done it only lasted about 70 miles an began to seize because they did not bore the cylinders bg enough to fit the new pistons. Once again taking months to get back, an again only lasting about 100 miles before loosing a head gasket an filling 3 clyinders with water, once again caused by poor work by Bay Speed.
With loosing the last motor only 2 weeks before our next rally we decided to go forward with our plan for the off season an put a KA24e into the Datsun, luckily we had a craigs list whip an boufght a 89 240sx project from a guy for just $400 Just a few weeks prior. But with only 2 weeks to rewire the car, ecu, an motor to work in harmony as well as the fabricating to get the motor in, an test everything , little sleep was had. Granted we had some wiring problems from following some other peoples swap guides, an having to find an auto trans ecu the day we were leaving, everything worked an worked great!
So with all that thats what brings me to this forum, our KA510
Any questions or comments feel free to ask away!!! Thanks Much!

Awesome work. Welcome. 510's have so much potential to look good. Too bad it's a rally car and not a regular street driven car that could look a billion times better.

Well i happen to think that rally cars look better than street cars anyways... thats why i have one, an being a rally car it is still completely street legal..Eckominds wrote:Awesome work. As for local events, we usualy compete in teh Rally America series www.rally-america.com but they dont have the schedule posted yet for next season.
But we will have the car out at the www.w-a-g.org rally-x this weekend in Chilton, WI.
