is it like a whining sound?

Liz has this problem with her SC300. when the stereo is off theres no sound but it makes a whine sound when it's on. it's some sort of engine ground sound from what i've read. also known as "altenator whine" not sure how to fix it though. google.

Does it get louder as your revs climb? It's like a distortion? It usually happens if you have an aftermarket amp and run your RCA cables and power cable on the same side of the car. I don't know if this applies to you, but it is some kind of interference, possibly a bad ground. If you don't have an aftermarket amp, check the ground for your radio, especially if it's aftermarket.

Short clean grounds are key, in the engine bay and off of the amp. Start there. ^ is right about running power wire near RCA cables too.

One other means of this sound (if its just a whine that increases with RPM and not with electrical load) is bad plug wires!
