Road rage incident pits Smart car vs. SUV

Brookfield police said Thursday that they want criminal charges filed against both parties in an unlikely road rage pairing - the driver of a tiny, two-door Smart car and the driver of an Oldsmobile SUV that police say tussled at high speed on Pilgrim Road.

The Smart car driver fled the scene of the 12:55 p.m. crash Wednesday on Pilgrim Road, south of Lisbon Road, police said.

The driver, a 45-year-old Theresa man, was arrested after a citizen who saw news reports of the incident spotted the Smart car in Germantown. The car was followed to Richfield, where Germantown police took the man into custody, Brookfield police said.

The SUV driver remained hospitalized Thursday, his wife said. The 45-year-old Menomonee Falls man did not suffer life-threatening injuries and was being treated at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, police said.

The man's wife said he did not want to comment about the incident.

Brookfield police said the road rage incident started in Menomonee Falls when one driver allegedly cut off the other driver on Pilgrim Road. Capt. Phil Horter said he did not know which driver started the incident because all of the reports are not finished.

"From there, they sped down Pilgrim Road at speeds up to 70 mph. While driving down Pilgrim, hand gestures were exchanged," Horter said.

The speed limit on Pilgrim Road in Brookfield is 35 mph.

they hold up pretty well, but they go for a hell of a ride while in the crash.
