Re: Saving the vert
I know dude. I am going to sand it down to bare metal and hit it with the rust convert where I can't sand; which won't be much. I also have some adhesive mesh that I will put over the holes.LongGrain wrote:rust converter will NOT fix that
and bondo is NOT structural. you cant just lay bondo over a hole. it will just crack out. you need to cut that metal out and weld in new sheets. bondo is just a finisher...
Thanks Simon, but Imma give this a shot.

Re: Saving the vert
^^ thats still not going to hold for more than a day or so of driving, but do what you want. its not my car.
there is nothing special about convertible quarter panels. S13 verts all started as coupes in japan, then a contracted company in america cut them into convertibles.

Re: Saving the vert
that sounds right.. so what you need is a coupe parts car.
all bondo will do is cover up rust, which is exactly what you DONT want to do.
and if I were you, id make sure that the undercoating that guy sprayed on your rails isnt holding moisture inside, making them rust as well..

Re: Saving the vert
The rust converter goes on before the bondo. I used it on my bumper without sanding any of the rust away; it's hard as nails now. Two coats brushed on and one sprayed was plenty. After I sand this down to bare metal I'll apply the same amount of rust converter on the little rust I couldn't get (which will be no where near the amount that is on my bumper) Yes, I know you can't completely kill rust, but it's gonna take a long ass time for it to come back through 3 coats of the converter, a coat of bondo, two coats of primer, however many coats of paint, and a clear coat.

Re: Saving the vert
A bandaid that will last longer than I will own the car, and then some. There's nothing wrong with this method. Bondo gets a bad name because people don't prep. It's the same as when someone rattle cans a car; If you prep properly and wet sand afterward it will great.
When ten or so years go by and I for some reason still own the car and the rust comes through, I'll look you up just so you can have the satisfaction of saying 'I told you so'

Re: Saving the vert
what the fuck do you mean bondo gets a bad rep
bondo is great. but your using it for the WRONG THING, period. the way you intend to "fix" your rust with bondo is WRONG. its not going to work, period. its going to crack and pop out, I give it a week if you are lucky.
you cant claim you are a newb to body work, and then try to shun everyone that tells you how to do shit right, when you are clearly uneducated in the topic. Do it right the first time or dont do it at all. you are just going to create more work for yourself.

Um, well, see, I never finished; barely started. Work got in the way. I should be working on it today, but I'm working on the truck instead.

Bored today? It looks like you're checking on everyones car progress, which isn't such a bad thing. I'm curious to see how they're going too!

I keep checking in every little while, and you're the only one who seems to be on! Something about 80's and sunny....
Sadly, I haven't spent even a minute working on my car today I need motivation!
