boost question Empty boost question

Post by mmm240 Fri Dec 11, 2009 1:30 am

The motor in question is a stock SR.

When I am at WOT and I hit 6 or so grand the gsuge goes crazy; the needle shakes back and forth real fast. I'm thinking it's just a tired little T25 trying to hold boost. I'm wondering if there is a problem somewhere.

What do you think?

The boost gauge? Do you feel any difference in driving the car whens the boost gauge is acting up?

gauge hooked up wrong or leaking, or maybe a torn wastegate diaphram

Well, I procrastinated and it's a lot worse now.

When off boost I hear it leaking; sounds like a flutter. And when boosting it sounds shitty.

sounds like a boost leak for sure.. i had a stud crack from the turbo to the manifold when my downpipe bottomed out one time, till i put a new stud in it wouldnt boost right at all.

just look for leaks, does it sound different at all? i started my car in the morning when the motor was cold, and went up by the manifold and just felt around by the turbo, manifold, downpipe, WG everywhere and looked for leaks, thats when i felt it leaking by the manifold and the turbo flange and then i realized that the bolt came loose, make sure all your gaskets are good and dont feel around too much cuz shit gets hot real fast lol.

hah, scratch pressure loss is what ur lookin for

go to autozone n get a vacuum/pressure tester. hook the hose up to the waste gate. stock t25's at 7lbs?... ok so pump it up to seven or eight or whatever (soemthing above) and watch for the wastegate flapper thingy to open. it should stay open, but if it slowly creeps down, or doesnt even open at 7+ psi, then ur wastegate diaphram is torn. replace the whole wastegate. might as well, u can find them for pretty cheap.

Hmmm, for 120 bucks:

Or... Should I slap on the 2860 I've been sitting on for a while?

boost question 0403091539

should be a direct bolt on correct?

it its a t2/t25 flange or w/e the hell then yea it's a bolt on.
but yea exhaust leaks can do this too.
and would mean ur actually running at a different boost setting then what the gauge displays.

haha. i would know.

check boost gauge for a good connection, make sure the hose isnt cracked or bent or whatever if its good great. maybe replace boost gauge first? idk they go out quite often if used for along time. check all your vacuum lines in the car.

Found my leak, it's at the manifold. I don't know how to get a wrench in there. There's a little piece of steel in the way. See pic:

boost question 0205001331

The leak is where my finger is, a cm forward is that piece of steel.

Any ideas?

It's folded around the nut. Pissing me off. I think I'm gonna have to pull the whole manifold off.
